What happens after the flush? Prescribing for patients and the planet: the role of eco-directed prescribing in reducing pharmaceutical pollution.
Participants will be able to:
Recognise the impact of pharmaceutical pollution on the environment and public health
Understand how medicines enter the environment and the consequences for ecosystems, water quality, biodiversity, and antimicrobial resistance.
Recognise that the next frontier in medicines optimisation is not only choosing the right medicine for the right patient, but doing so in a way that safeguards the environment on which our health ultimately depends
Understand how evidence from MRC and UKRI research shows that prescribing decisions can influence environmental outcomes
Identify opportunities for eco-directed prescribing within everyday clinical practice
Apply prescribing principles that optimise patient outcomes while minimising unnecessary environmental harm, including appropriate medicine selection, review, and disposal.
